BINGEN COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECT – SUMMER 2024

We are excited to announce a new mural project on the side of Sun Sun, a central downtown Bingen store. This project will introduce vibrant new art that will attract positive attention to the town. It also features a community collaboration element, allowing Bingen youth to participate in the creation of the mural. This initiative not only benefits the entire community but also provides Bingen residents with a heartwarming story that will enhance appreciation for the dynamic new downtown art.

This art will be painted by local artist Jess Mudgett, and will celebrate the many joys of Bingen in honor of the 100th year anniversary as well as Sun Sun’s first year!

COLOR OUTSIDE

Color Outside the Lines is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering and inspiring deserving and underserved youth through art, music, and creativity. We believe in the transformative power of art to enhance mental and emotional well-being. Having curated and produced over thirty public murals in Oregon, we provide youth and residents with unique opportunities to contribute to community beautification. This experience equips them with tools to boost confidence, self-worth, and a sense of belonging. Our work also supports local artists, fostering vibrant communities and nurturing the creatives who enrich them, with the overarching goal of strengthening community bonds and adding value to shared public spaces.

MADELINE MACNAUGHTON

SunSun and owner Madeline MacNaughton ~ Hi, my name is Madeline and I’m the owner of SunSun- a little retail shop based in Bingen,WA. We are coming up on the shop’s first anniversary and are really excited to celebrate with a community based mural.

With everything I bring into the shop, I always lead with joy, curiosity, and creativity. There is always a treasure to be discovered.

My favorite part about SunSun is having an open door to the community. With every interaction, I can feel a deeper weaving into the connectedness of our little town! SunSun is a place to celebrate art, beauty and community, and I am so excited to bring a little more of that to Bingen with this mural.

JESS MUDGETT

Local artist Jess Mudgett, who spent his childhood between Colorado and the Gorge, discovered his passion for painting and drawing at a young age. With a father who taught U.S. history, Jess grew up surrounded by antiques and native objects, fueling his fascination and inspiring his work. His art frequently draws from western history and nature a consistent source of inspiration.

Balancing uncertainty, sacrifices, and adventure, art has always been a fulfilling pursuit for Jess. Now, he is thrilled to call the Gorge home once again. He will paint this mural with Bingen’s beauty and history in mind, creating artwork that celebrates 100 years of this vibrant community, resonating with both locals and visitors.

THE MURAL

The mural will depict a quilt, with each section featuring an image that reflects Bingen’s rich history and natural beauty. This artwork will honor local Native heritage, the tugboats and fishermen on the river, magestic Mount Hood, and the local plants, animals, and scenic  surroundings that make Bingen the special place it is.
