Oh Joy of Joys: A Lasting Tribute to Guillermo “Willy” Fisch in Downtown Bingen
Guillermo “Willy” Fisch was more than a beloved figure in Bingen, Washington—he was a daily dose of joy, a walking celebration of life, and a cherished community icon. Though he passed away in 2017, his spirit continues to animate the town he called home. Now, thanks to a remarkable community effort, Willy’s legacy has been immortalized in bronze.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1940, Willy’s journey took him across the globe before he settled in Bingen. His extensive experience in the marine industry, particularly with tuna fishing fleets, made him an invaluable asset to Insitu — a burgeoning tech company in Bingen. As one of Insitu’s original employees, he played a pivotal role in connecting the company’s UAV products with maritime markets.
Beyond his professional achievements, Willy was a dedicated public servant, serving on the Bingen City Council. Affectionately dubbed the “other mayor of Bingen,” he was a familiar sight downtown—always impeccably dressed, often with a swisher sweet cigar in hand, and ever ready to share a smile or a witty remark.
Willy founded the 5:03 Club—a casual post-work gathering that began just across the street from the Insitu offices at a local wine tasting room. For most, it was a quick three-minute walk to unwind, connect, and raise a glass. After the tasting room closed, he and his wife Jeri transformed a rundown nearby home into a vibrant space for friends to gather, eat, sip, and share stories. It became more than just a hangout—it was a hub of community, camaraderie, and laughter. These gatherings were rich with shared stories, and the ever-popular “Willy-isms.”
In the years following his passing, those close to Willy dreamed of a way to keep his joyful spirit alive in Bingen. That dream became reality in 2024, when a group of devoted friends and supporters came together to commission a public art piece in his honor. What started as a modest concept quickly grew when renowned sculptor—and dear friend—Douglas C. Granum joined the project. With the expert craftsmanship of Parks Bronze in Joseph, Oregon, the piece evolved into a striking, life-sized sculpture full of heart, detail, and personality—just like Willy himself.
The project drew support from more than 70 donors, many of whom contributed exactly $503 as a playful nod to the 5:03 Club. Whether you knew Willie well or were simply touched by the energy he brought into the world, people from all walks of life stepped up to make sure his memory lived on.
The statue—titled “Oh Joy of Joys”—was officially unveiled in April 2024 during Bingen’s Centennial Birthday Bash. Located at 115 Steuben Street, it now stands as a permanent installation in the Big Art Northshore program, welcoming locals and visitors alike to pause, smile, and maybe even raise a toast.
Willie Fisch may no longer walk the streets of Bingen, but his presence is felt deeply—in the laughter of friends, in the traditions carried on, and now, in bronze, greeting everyone who passes by with the same warmth and joy he shared every day.
Next time you’re in downtown Bingen, take a stroll down Steuben Street and say hi to Willy. If you feel compelled to keep his memory shining, the Northshore Community Foundation continues to accept donations to help maintain and care for this special piece of public art.
